Art Word: Figure-Ground Reversal

Term figure-ground reversal used in a two-dimensional work to describe a visual illusion where perception alternates between two possibilities. A pair of shapes, either of which taken alone would be seen as an object of some kind, share a common border-line. This effect is often used in graphic arts, and pieces by Dutch artist Maurits Cornelis Escher brightly illustrate it.
